Civitanova Marche - Fabriano line: Civil Defence Service drill in the Bura tunnel

Tolentino, 26 October 2024 - A regional train coming from Macerata and bound for Fabriano suffers a braking bogie failure: a fire starts in the first car and the driver is injured. The train stops about 200 metres from the northern entrance to the Bura tunnel (MC); inside the train, in addition to the driver, there were the train conductor and some passengers.

This is the scenario of the Civil Defence Service drill that took place this morning on the Civitanova Marche - Fabriano railway line, organised by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Group), under the coordination of the Prefecture of Macerata and the participation of the Macerata Provincial Fire Brigade, the Railway Police Department for Marche, Umbria and Abruzzo, the Macerata Police Headquarters, the Provincial Carabinieri Station of Macerata, the Provincial Finance Police Station of Macerata, the Macerata Traffic Police Section, the 118 Service of Macerata, NUE 112, the Marche Region Civil Defence Service, the Municipalities of Tolentino and San Severino, Trenitalia Direzione Regionale Marche and FS Security of the FS Group.

Particular attention was paid to verifying the effectiveness and speed of activation of emergency management procedures.

This drill is part of FS Italiane Group's Annual Drills Plan for tunnels under 5,000 metres, in order to monitor the effectiveness of the communication flow and the coordination system between the different Bodies, as well as the familiarisation with the railway infrastructure, in particular with regard to the methods and timing of access and intervention for rescue purposes inside the tunnel. All to improve safety standards and the protection of people, property and the environment.

The common objective was to test the emergency and rescue plan in force issued by the Prefecture of Macerata, and to field-test the technical intervention and assistance system envisaged by the memoranda of understanding drawn up between the FS Group, NUE 112, the Health Emergency Service and the Regional Civil Defence Service.

The activities caused no repercussions on train traffic.
