Napoli - Bari

Napoli - Bari

The project envisages the upgrading and speeding up of the Naples-Bari route, which will allow the southern railway infrastructure to be integrated with the Scandinavia-Mediterranean Core Corridor.

The main objective is to speed up the current connection and improve accessibility to the service in the areas crossed, both for national long-distance services and for regional and freight services.

Upon completion of the work, the Naples-Bari link will be travelled in 2 hours, compared to about 4 hours today, whilst the Rome-Bari link will take 3 hours, as a saving of about two hours compared to now.

The work represents a great job creation engine. More than 7,000 people are involved in the project, including engineers, technicians and workers.

Roberto Pagone was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for the works. The commissioning of the Naples – Bari line has made the acceleration of the various steps necessary for the completion of the work possible, with shorter authorisation processes and deliverables, to reduce costs and times of completion. In addition, a special Task Force has been created to monitor the progress of the projects and examine any critical issues, in order to reach their resolution in compliance with the deadlines and costs defined in the Commissioner's Planning.

Advantages

  • For the Bari-Naples connections, a travel time of about 2 hours is expected, whilst for the Rome-Bari connections a travel time of 3 hours is expected.
  • With the phased activation of the new sections of the route, all level crossings on the current line will be eliminated.
  • A new Hirpinia station will be activated on the Apice-Orsara section.
  • On the Naples-Foggia section, the theoretical capacity will go from the current 4 trains/hour in both directions of travel to 10 trains/hour in each direction of travel.
  • It will be possible to circulate trains with semi-trailers, with a load per axle up to 22.5 tonnes and 750 metres long on the Naples-Foggia section.

Added value for the environment

  • Passenger and freight traffic between the two cities today takes place mostly on road. The new line also meets the need to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Accessibility to freight facilities in Caserta will be improved for freight, which can contribute to the achievement of the objectives set by the EU White Paper on Transport: to transfer 30% of freight traffic over 300 km from road to rail by 2030 and 50% by 2050.
  • The new line will make it possible to reduce the interference of the existing one with the network, especially due to the elimination of the existing level crossings, and to recover, redevelop and enhance areas currently used for railway activity.
  • The new line construction activities are accompanied by environmental monitoring before installation, during construction and after operation, the results of which are constantly transmitted to the Ministry of Environment.
  • The main environmental components will be monitored for the sections under design, in line with the indications of the pertinent bodies.
