Luigi Ferraris (FS) appointed new Chairman of the UC Europe Region

The International Union of Railways Regional Assembly Europe has appointed the Chief Executive Officer of Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane to lead the European area for 2024-2025

Rome, December 15th ,2023 - Luigi Ferraris, Chief Executive Officer of Gruppo FS Italiane, has been appointed new Europe Region Chairman for the period 2024-2025 by the UIC Regional Assembly Europe. The UIC (International Union of Railways) is the international organisation that gathers railways and major railway stakeholders from all over the world.

Mr Ferraris takes over the leadership of the EMC, the European Management Committee, from Martin Frobisher of Network Rail, the UK rail infrastructure manager. This appointment follows the Committee's proposal dated September 2023.

"I am honoured for this prestigious assignment over the next two years. Alongside my colleagues, CEOs from other European railways companies members of UIC, we will work to develop initiatives and projects of the UIC Region Europe and tackle with the many challenges ahead," - commented Luigi Ferraris - “The development of the railways systems within an outlook of an ever increasing decarbonisation process will represent our main goal, whereas digitalisation and innovation will be our enablers.  I believe that by means of a close collaboration between technical developments and the European Union's political agenda will be the key to reach great results”.

The first EMC meeting under the new chairmanship will be held on February 19th 2024 in Rome. A key milestone in establishing the roadmap, strategies and priorities for the coming years for the UIC Region Europe.

The Chief Executive Officer of Gruppo FS in his role as President of the UIC Region Europe, will then work closely with the European members to enhance a competitive, sustainable and engaging rail transport system for the more than 500 million citizens throughout Europe.
