Santa Margherita Ligure: a new underground multi-storey car park at the railway station

Memorandum of Understanding signed today between FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Italiane Group) and the Municipality of Santa Margherita Ligure

Rome, 12 January 2023

Signed today was the Memorandum of Understanding for construction of a new underground multi-storey car park next to the Santa Margherita Ligure railway station. The agreement was signed at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport by Umberto Lebruto – CEO of FS Sistemi Urbani (FS Italiane Group) delegated by Metropark, and by Paolo Donadoni – Mayor of Santa Margherita Ligure, in the presence of the CEO of the FS Italiane Group, Luigi Ferraris, and the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Honourable Edoardo Rixi.

The Protocol defines an action plan for the joint construction of the new underground multi-storey car park through the establishment of a technical table, which will be followed by the design, financing, execution and testing of the works. The new facility will be built on an area owned by the FS Italiane Group of some 3,300 square metres, where there is currently a car park and a former freight warehouse. The technical table will additionally study the possibility of creating a direct connection to the seaside promenade. The Protocol sets out a tight schedule, where operational meetings will start within the next ten days. The multi-storey car park is located at the entrance to the city, in a strategic position that hosts rail, bus, taxi and bike services.

With this operation, FS Sistemi Urbani (the lead company of the FS Italiane Group’s Urban Hub) and the Municipality of Santa Margherita Ligure intend to enhance a strategic area with the aim of facilitating access to the station and favouring a rail-road modal interchange, whilst at the same time guaranteeing a new service to the community, representing for Santa Margherita Ligure a historic opportunity for growth and development in terms of the road network, parking availability, quality of life and eco-sustainability.

The project is part of the 250 car parks that Metropark SpA – a subsidiary of FS Sistemi Urbani – will have to manage nationwide by 2031 pursuant to the FS Italiane Group Business Plan presented in May 2022.
