Verona: the development of the “Central Park” gets the go-ahead

The Memorandum of Understanding between the Veneto Region, the Municipality of Verona and FS Italiane Group has been signed for the conversion of the former freight terminal of Verona Porta Nuova

Verona, 5 July 2019

The technical and administrative process for the creation of a “Central Park” in Verona is now under way.

The Memorandum of Understanding regarding the conversion of the areas within the former freight terminal of Verona Porta Nuova was signed today.

Validating the agreement were Elisa De Berti, Regional Councillor for Public Works, Infrastructure and Transport, Federico Sboarina, Mayor of Verona and Umberto Lebruto, Chief Executive Officer of  FS Sistemi Urbani.

The aim is to transform the areas of the airport — approximately 45 hectares that unfurl south of the station, along the route connecting Verona Porta Nuova station with the Fiera area — into a safe public park that is accessible and functional for bordering neighbourhoods and for the entire city, along with the creation of a new urban polarity.

A technical table composed of the Veneto Region, the Municipality of Verona and the FS Italiane Group Companies (Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, FS Sistemi Urbani and Mercitalia Logistics), will develop the masterplan and analyse the economic sustainability with the objective of sharing and approving the new railway area structure and commencing the subsequent urban planning process within 15 months.

This will facilitate the creation of a new access point to the Verona Porta Nuova station from the south, increasing its intermodal vocation, rendering it quickly and effectively accessible — via both public and private transport — also for those coming from the Fiera area and from the southern districts of the city generally.
