Over 5 million people travelling on Trenitalia regional trains throughout the Christmas holidays

+10% compared to the same period last year

Rome, 9 January 2019

Over 5 million people have utilised Trenitalia's regional trains over the Christmas holidays, visiting art cities and tourist locations.

This signifies a 10% increase compared with the same period last year. Christmas, Boxing Day/Saint Stephen’s Day, New Year’s Eve and Epiphany are the days that recorded the greatest fluxes.

This result affirms Trenitalia’s commitment and effort to offering a service that increasingly responds to the needs of people travelling by train.

In the last few years, concrete actions have facilitated constant improvement to the standards regarding regularity, punctuality and comfort of travel. In 2018, 84.5% of people surveyed during the customer satisfaction survey said they were satisfied with the services. This ever-increasing appreciation is also as a result of the important reinterpretation of industrial processes and of the organisational mechanism managing regional transport.

On public holidays and weekends, regional trains are increasingly chosen by millions of people to move about for leisure, tourism and same-day return trips.

Topping the list of favourite destinations are the major cities of Turin, Milan, Venice, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. Also greatly appreciated are the short distance connections within the same region, particularly to medium-sized towns such as Treviso, Monterosso (Cinque Terre), Modena, Ferrara, Pisa, Prato, Cefalù and Pietrarsa-San Giorgio a Cremano, where the National Railway Museum can be visited to see a plethora of Fondazione FS Italiane initiatives (seen by over 170,000 people in 2018).

Travellers who have utilised Trenitalia’s regional trains during the recent Christmas holidays appreciated the customer care service exclusively dedicated to commuters - a first in Europe - aboard trains and in the stations. This service transfers to regional trains some of the pros that have been, to date, the exclusive prerogative of the Frecce trains. The main objective is to improve the quality of travel and the lives of millions of people who use Trenitalia services and who request even more attention, information and security - in addition to punctuality, cleanliness and comfort.

Flanking the customer care service, FS Italiane has enacted a plan to relaunch the fleet of trains used for regional and metropolitan transport, being unprecedented in the history of the Italian railways, seeing 600 new trains and an economic investment of approximately 6 billion euro. Within five years, this plan will allow 80% of Trenitalia's regional fleet to be renewed.
