Inauguration of the “MovEat Expo” exhibition

Food on the road from ancient Rome to modern-day Europe, an interactive itinerary among finds, photos, maps and documents testifying the attention paid to food and eating

Rome, 25 May 2015

MovEat Expo, “Le vie del cibo: dalla Roma antica all’Europa moderna” (Food on the road from ancient Rome to modern-day Europe) is an exhibition of extremely important pieces provided by the “Soprintendenza Speciale per il Colosseo il Museo Nazionale Romano e l’area archeologica di Roma” (Special Authority for the Colosseum, the National Roman Museum and the Archaeological Area of Rome) alongside the latest research and multi-sensorial tools.

This exhibition entails an interactive itinerary among finds, pictures, maps and documents testifying the attention paid finding and eating food in ancient Rome intended not just as a city, but as a civilisation, illustrating the central role played by Italy in European and worldwide routes known at the time and development in food transportation through a multimedia itinerary.

It was decided to combine a traditional exhibition with a series of multimedia products and reconstruction of a “caupona” (ancient Roman tavern) with all its furnishings to involve visitors not only through the objects exhibited but also with pictures, films and reconstructions, transporting them into an authentic ancient tavern.

The “caupona” was place in which people could buy ready-made meals to either take home or eat in.

The main environment of a “caupona” had a counter comprising food and drink containers, a wood oven to cook and heat up food and shelves displaying ready-made meals, dishes and cutlery, as well as dolia (large earthenware containers) in the floors containing wine and oil and urns with olives, fruit and sauces.
