Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane was awarded the 2022 Innovation Award at Smau, Italy’s leading event on innovation and start-ups, held in Milan on 11 and 12 October.
Taking out top spot was the “Carri Intelligenti” (“Intelligent Wagons”) project for the digitisation of freight transport, with a system capable of transforming railway wagons into intelligent, digitised systems equipped with on-board telematics and sensors for tracking and monitoring the main drive and operating parameters. Two objectives: to offer an increasingly-efficient service in line with customer needs and to enable predictive fleet maintenance.
To date, the system has already been fitted to a few hundred freight wagons but the aim is to render the entire fleet “intelligent” as early as the next few months.
