Harassment in public places is a real and serious problem that needs to be addressed.

More than 70% of women worldwide report experiencing sexual harassment in public places and this is an alarming figure that shows how widespread this type of abuse still is. That is why it is important to raise awareness of this issue and to spread tools and knowledge so that everyone can act as an active network in combating it.

Let's discover the 5D approach. A safe and concrete method to combat harassment.

DISTRACT to disturb and hinder the action of the harasser.

You can ask for directions, the time or the nearest ATM.

You can get in the way or disturb by 'accidentally' dropping something or pretending to spill something.

Standing next to the person who is being harassed and saying nothing can be an equally valid alternative.

DELEGATE to involve the people around you.

Look around and find someone who is close to the place where the harassment is taking place and inform them about what is happening.

You can also address a person in authority depending on where you are: security officers, a bartender or the police.

Asking someone else for help is the same as helping.

DOCUMENT to witness what is happening.

Observe and witness, note details or particulars of those harassing.

It might seem rather obvious, but before you turn on the camera, bear in mind that you are doing it to help the person harassed and not just recording something terrible that is happening.

It is essential to always ask the person harassed what they want to do with the video or images. Never publish them online and do not use them without permission.

DELAY to support who suffered the harassment.

Talk to the person who has been harassed.

Acknowledge that what happened is not good and that it is absolutely not their fault.

Give them the support they need and that you would want to receive in their place. Empathy can achieve a lot.

DIRECT to cease harassment,

Speak up and address the harasser by saying that what they are doing is not OK. In any case, avoid any argument.

Ask them to leave the victim alone or talk to the harassed person about what is happening. Use this action as a last resort to prevent violence.

Your safety and that of the victim are a priority.

If you have experienced harassment in public places, it is important to know that you are not alone.

No matter who you are, what you are wearing or where you are, you have the right to feel safe.

There is no one solution to stop harassment in public places, there are five.

Together, we can make a difference andbring about important social changes.
