As a variant to the route currently in operation, the project foresees a doubling of the track between Andora and Finale Ligure, with an extension of about 32 kilometres, of which 25 kilometres would be within tunnels, completing the track-doubling of the Genoa-Ventimiglia international line.

Also envisaged is completion of the Master Plan of the Finale Ligure Station, finishing the Albenga and Andora Stations as well as the Pietra Ligure, Borghetto Santo Spirito-Loano and Alassio (underground) stops. The construction of the new line will enhance freight and passenger connections along with the adoption of the highest technological and safety standards.

Vincenzo Macello was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for completion of the works.
