The Italian railway network is at the centre of an unprecedented revolution, an acceleration made possible thanks in part to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan's funds, with the FS Group as its main implementing party. This set of projects does not allow for any delays, with deadlines that need to be strictly complied with. Modernisation and upgrading are the key words of a financial and engineering commitment that will change the face of the Country's mobility, from North to South, making it increasingly united, and focused on sustainability.
In this context, RFI - the lead company of the FS Group's Infrastructure Business Unit - has planned extraordinary works on the infrastructure for the coming months, in order to comprehensively upgrade the Country's main railway lines. The aim is to raise the efficiency standards of the network, so as to ensure an increasingly modern, integrated, accessible, high-performing, reliable and fast infrastructure for passenger and freight transport.
In order to improve performance, it is necessary to provide constant and widespread maintenance works, some of which have already been carried out during the year. In some of the main stations affected by temporary traffic measures, public information will be reinforced through the presence of dedicated staff.
In the meantime, part of the works planned for the first part of the year were completed on schedule, and involved infrastructural upgrades to the Adriatic Line and installation of the ERTMS system in Sardinia, on the Macomer-Ozieri Chilivani Line.
In the coming months, the following interruptions and inevitable lengthening of journey times are expected on the High-Speed Line:
And, apart from the high-speed line, during the summer season several regional routes will be affected by disruptions and works on the railway. These include: on the Milan-Domodossola Line, from 9 June to 8 September, a 90-day interruption on the Arona - Premosello and Arona - Sesto Calende routes; in Lazio on the Viterbo-Cesano Line, from 10 July to 8 September, interruptions between Cesano di Roma and Viterbo to install the ERTMS system; in Calabria between Lamezia Terme and Catanzaro Lido, from 10 June to 4 August, a 50-day interruption to install the ERTMS system; in Sicily between Palermo and Catania, from 10 June to 7 September, interruptions along the Imera-Villarosa route for consolidation and waterproofing works on the Morello bridge.
