Rome, 16 February 2016

It is important to prefer a collective means of transport when travelling, as it is an environmentally-friendly means of transport.

It is important to cook with a low environmental impact, to turn off electrical appliances and not leave them on stand-by, but especially turn off lights. Besides, it is important to use the car as little as possible sharing it with who follows the same routes, and to use bikes for moving around the city.

These are a few of the suggestions provided in the “10 set of rules (+one).” Using collective means of transport has been added to the ten best practices of the campaign "M’illumino di meno," an initiative promoted by Radio 2 through its radio programme Caterpillar and supported by Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane on the occasion of the day devoted to energy saving and sustainable mobility.

The set of rules of "M'illumino di meno" is available on caterpillar.blog.rai.it

Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane is daily committed in the implementation of sustainable mobility projects involving travellers and personnel.

All of FS’s industrial actions are focused on optimizing energy efficiency and collective transport competitiveness, both rail and tyre.

The main protagonist is the train, as it is the means that groups various highly sustainable characteristics: energy efficiency, the use of renewable energies and materials, low CO2 emissions.

On 19 February, the day devoted to "M’illumino di meno," concomitantly with the radio programme Caterpillar, Gruppo FS Italiane will carry out a symbolical action by turning off its headquarters’ sign in Rome from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The “10 set of rules” (+one) for energy saving

Gruppo Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane supports the campaign aimed at increasing energy saving and sustainable mobility awareness by calling to mind simple daily actions that can make the difference, both at home and at the office:

  1. turn off lights when unnecessary
  2. turn off electrical appliances and do not leave them on stand-by
  3. defrost the fridge frequently; keep the coil clean and at a distance from the wall so as to enable air circulation
  4. cover pots when boiling water, and always make sure the flame is not wider than the base of the pot
  5. when too hot, turn down the heating system instead of opening windows
  6. reduce draughts coming from frames filling the latter with materials that do not allow air to pass through
  7. use curtains in front of windows, frames and external doors so as to create an air space
  8. do not leave curtains closed in front of radiators
  9. insert special isolating and reflecting films between external walls and radiators
  10. use the car as little as possible sharing it with who follows the same routes. Use a bike for moving around the city

10+1. prefer collective means of transport, a choice for the environment.
