Now in its twentieth year, the initiative aims to raise awareness of the best practices to adopt on a daily basis in order to rationalise energy consumption.
Once again for 2024, FS Italiane Group adheres to M'illumino di meno, the National Day of Energy Saving and Sustainable Lifestyles that Rai Radio2 organises with Caterpillar to spread the culture of environmental sustainability and resource saving.
To mark the occasion, the 'Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane' sign at Villa Patrizi, i.e. the Rome headquarters, will be switched off today 16 February, the National Energy Saving and Sustainable Lifestyles Day. A symbolic initiative that testifies to the Group's daily commitment to optimising energy consumption.
A gesture that adds to the many activities undertaken by FS Group as part of its renewable energy self-production programme: ranging from photovoltaic panels on the roofs of stations and workshops, to energy efficiency upgrades on trains down to the adoption of LED lighting systems.
The FS energy strategy is articulated along four main lines of action: modal shift (promotion of passenger and freight transport by rail or intermodal solutions), phase out of fossil fuels (through the progressive electrification of rail networks and the use of alternative fuels), energy efficiency and renewable energy production.
The ultimate goal is to cover 40% of FS energy needs and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 (ten years earlier than planned by the EU). This milestone includes a significant intermediate step: using 2019 as a baseline, FS aims to reduce direct and indirect emissions by 50% by 2030 and to reduce value chain emissions, which include emissions generated by suppliers, customers, employees and other external sources, by 30%.
