The project aims to strengthen the passenger connection between the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic regions and to create an alternative freight route for north-south connections. The works, broken down into several stages, consist in doubling mainly as a track variant of certain sections of the Orte-Falconara Apennine transversal.

The project has received partial public funding, including NRRP funds.

Vincenzo Macello was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for completion of the works.

Advantages

Upon completion of the operations, the possibility to achieve a reduction in travel times between Rome and Ancona for some services by up to about 30 minutes and between Rome and Perugia by up to about 15 minutes in relation to the operating model and the completion of the Spoleto-Terni doubling.
Improvement of the levels of regularity thanks to a review of the operating model that derives from the new infrastructural configuration and the different programming of services, also in relation to the completion of the Spoleto-Terni doubling.
Increased capacity – from 4 to 10 trains/hour on the entire line.
Improvement of the conditions of accessibility to the service.
Performance adjustment to allow the transit of freight trains.
