The intervention is divided into two functional phases: the first consists in the extension of the current single track Palermo Notarbartolo - Giachery line to the new station called Politeama and, subsequently, in the closure of the ring from the Politeama station to the Palermo station Notarbartolo.​

The second phase involves the construction of the new Turrisi Colonna stop and the transformation of the Politeama station into a stop.​

The project's design phase has received public funding.

Christian Colaneri was appointed Extraordinary Governmental Commissioner for completion of the works.
