The intervention consists in the decommissioning of the current track and, at the same time, in the construction of a new double and electrified track with an extension of approximately 11 km between the service areas of Giovinazzo and Bari Parco Nord. In addition, plans are in place to build a new Bari Santo Spirito-Palese station on the new route, complete with a passenger terminal and associated park-and-ride facility, to replace the existing Bari Palese and Bari Santo Spirito stations located on the current line.

The new station will include no. 4 tracks, two of which siding, with a length of 750 m, TSI PRM-standard H55 platforms, canopies, station signs and a public information system. A new passenger complex and the related interchange car park will also be built. Access to the platforms will be provided by means of an overpass, fixed and mobile ramps and lifts, as the new passenger complex will be higher than track level. The project also includes the construction of a new Airport stop.

The intervention will lessen interference with heavily urbanised areas by eliminating all level crossings and improving quality standards and the regularity of commercial services.

The Bari Nord railway junction project is currently at the design stage. The full work schedule is subject to the availability of funding for the construction phase.

With effect from 12 March 2026, the date on which Decree-Law No. 36 (published in the Official Gazette No. 58 of 11 March 2026) came into force, in accordance with Article 5 of that decree, the Chief Executive Officer of RFI SpA has taken over from the previously appointed Extraordinary Commissioners.

The advantages

  • Improved reliability and punctuality of the line, with fewer delays caused by disruptions resulting from the level crossings.
  • Improved line performance: upgrading to allow the passage of freight trains up to 740 metres in length.
  • Improved network accessibility: construction of the new Bari Santo Spirito-Palese station and new Airport stop.
  • Accessibility for people with reduced mobility: the Bari Santo Spirito-Palese station will comply with the provisions of the current TSI PRM standards in order to ensure that people with reduced mobility may also use the rail service.
