The project is part of the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 renovation program, which includes works aimed at eliminating 12 level crossings on the Lecco - Tirano line, on the Colico - Sondrio and Sondrio - Tirano sections along the Stelvio State Road SS38, and interventions to reduce noise.
The works include the construction of three vehicle underpasses, a bicycle-pedestrian underpass, connecting roads to existing roadways, and the reconstruction of an overpass, and will affect the following municipalities:
- Forcola
- Colorina
- Montagna in Valtellina - Poggiridenti
- Ponte in Valtellina - Chiuro
- Chiuro - Teglio
- Bianzone
Gianpiero Strisciuglio was appointed Extraordinary Government Commissioner for the completion of the works.
