FS Group and TIM: 4G coverage extends along the Milan-Bologna high-speed rail network

An important leap forward in the context of an agreement to develop connectivity aboard trains and in stations

Rome, 5 July 2022

Within the tunnels of the Milan-Bologna high-speed line, the FS Italiane Group and TIM have activated the first mobile radio coverage system with 4G technology, thus achieving full service along the route.

4G technology allows passengers to enjoy a stable and high-quality connection even in the most unfavourable areas like railway tunnels, both through the Wi-Fi service on board the train and through the direct coverage of all TLC Operators that have joined the project, with TIM first in line then iliad, Vodafone and WINDTRE.

Upgrades to 4G technology will also begin in the coming months on the high-speed lines between Bologna and Florence, then continue throughout 2023 from Turin to Milan, Florence to Naples and Bologna to Venice. The aim is to achieve increasingly reliable voice and data connectivity along high-speed lines but also on conventional lines, starting with the busiest routes so as to guarantee a high-quality service to passengers on HS, Intercity and Regional trains and to railway companies operating in freight transport.

Activation of the installations on the Milan-Bologna high-speed train line represents the first step in the agreement signed in December 2021 between the FS Italiane Group, through the infrastructure manager RFI, and TIM. Furthermore, as part of the initiatives related to the PNRR (Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan), feasibility studies on the possible use of 5G technologies are also envisaged.
